During these months of March and April 2011 can be viewed at the Library of Salamanca Torrente Ballester, and as one of their activities cultural exhibition on the old school, which, in addition to the many and varied books exhibited in the showcases, there are detailed theoretical information on panels, on the historical evolution of teaching and education since 1926. But, in addition to books, we can see how it was a classroom: individual desks or two children or two girls with his ink, teacher's desk and on it the area of the world, the rules or brackets, and the large slate wall and general maps of Spain or the world. Nor crucifix was missing, especially in the aftermath of the Civil War, when the National Catholicism. I'm sure the exhibition will appeal to all lovers of heritage and specifically, the past and its traditions. As you rightly said one of the panels, "to reconstruct the past history of education is nothing better than to resort to the exhibition of old school books, manuals aged and worn, in black and white, in general, and simple drawings that played a key role in the training of generations of citizens that make up the current social reality. Through the old textbooks could be developed on the anthropological and cultural models of education, the ideological state control and the values of the society of his time. " books and other necessary supplies, are mounted and arranged on the shelves by subjects or themes: about geography, history, physics and natural science, arithmetic, geometry and mathematics, books on religion, morality and training behavior, patriotic books, books on physiology and hygiene, gymnastics, home economics, specific for the training of girls around, and the other children, etc. Do not forget the encyclopedias, containing almost all the materials and that became an essential element in learning. It is often said that 'everything is in the books' and indeed, the exhibition includes all the knowledge and understanding of the period, to cause surprise and admiration of many visitors.

In some villages in the Valles de Benavente case that board members or presidents of some guilds have different poles, according to the position bearing the same president or steward, judge, registrar, other members of management, or just the brothers. The distinction may be by size, or even the decor has the auction, the top of them. Navianos is the case of Valverde, the Confraternity of the Virgin of Carmen. They carry sticks or clubs, different in size, shape and even decorative, depending on whether the butler, secretary, or simple brakemen. And the same is true of Tera Abraveses in the brotherhood of the Virgen de las Encinas. Here are different in the closing yards, but only either by the size, the judge and the secretary. They have both raised the image of the Virgin on the front and a tree in the back. And, according to tradition or legend, the Virgin appeared with an oak of the mountain that was once in place, and where the chapel was built there today. The clubs that have the butler and secretary of the Brotherhood of St Blas Morales Valverde, although they have the same image painted on the front and the holy souls in torment on the back, are of greater size than those of other brakemen. There are sticks or clubs whose top is a small sculpture in wood. Thus we saw in the pilgrimage to the Virgen del Campo in Rosinos of Vidriales.

-------------------------------------------- ------
As in many other towns and cities of Castile and Leon, with more or less population, are ground Campos, Páramo or other regions, Benavente also has a Plaza Mayor, well known and named Traditionally, though he had other names over its history, and Plaza of Spain and Market Square, to be held in it, since ancient times, the market Thursday, as their shape and structure was different. Pascual Madoz in Gazetteer-Statistical-Historical (1845-1850), writing about Benavente and refer to its monuments, important buildings and streets, reads: "Today we are building a beautiful house in the Plaza Ayuntamiento Mayor, or market, with a view to the Ox, which has 155 feet long., 36, lat., 40 high and the main facade and 80 for the accessory, that is all stone masonry raised above 13 arches, and O. consists of two orders of architecture, Tuscan and Doric, the first to the first ledge and the second from there to the end. It has 2 bows bigger than the other 11 of which one serves for the communication of the Plaza Mayor with the Ox, the parts of the fab. that stand in correspondence with the arches, are almoadillado, and the other smooth. On the 5 arches comes amid a broad ledge space to serve as a pedestal to the large balcony of iron should be placed in the middle, and on top of each other arches, there is enough to put railings fenestration. And in their way, by listing other streets, says the author mentioned above or Market Square "which is an almost perfect square, 80 to 90 steps, with tiled arcades." The Plaza is located in the center of the town of the city and attracts attention and is appreciated by the visitors, both in its form, as stated, for the buildings, with varying degrees of seniority, that surround it. Some of these, to be rebuilt, have changed the look you once had. Of these the most important, no doubt, and the text quoted is that of the Town Hall or City Hall, a neoclassical style. The construction project was provided by D. Manuel Díez Neighbor and executed in 1846 by architect D. Pedro Guzman. It was remodeled in 1878 by D. Second Weeding Viloria. In the sixties of last century raised its cover to save space. This building replaced the former home of the Regiment who was in the Plaza de San Nicolás and the current square. The Plaza is almost entirely arcades and buildings in it, built mostly in the nineteenth century was dominated by brick, except in the Hall, which is of stone. Some, to be restored or rebuilt were modified. Each is known by the name, last name, trade or occupation that is practiced there and still call: House Lesmes, Moran House, Daniel Allen House, Home of the Fishmongers, and so on. The narrow streets around the square are also worth attention, by name and by the importance of some buildings: Pasaje Pin Count, now street cherries, the Butchers Street, street of Cortes Street Leonesas and Cartagena, which will give the Plaza de San Juan. In the Plaza is held forever, as I said earlier, markets, once the vegetables, then known and most famous flea market on Thursday and today, for years, held back the vegetables. Also in the square called the Bull Enmaromado Veguilla the day takes place the solemn meeting on Easter and she is the final or she spend many parades, processions, horseback riding, etc. In addition, during the summer of cultural activities: concerts, theater, magosto years, all to the liking of the public. The rest of the year, although there is so many activities, the place is never empty and alone, it is always accompanied and full of cars that reduce and almost canceled the beauty that still holds. Cars that impede or calm and peaceful walk through it, as in antiquity. Cars that get noticed, and what many tourists complain that approaches the information desk located in the basement of City Hall. And they complain because compared to other places in towns with similar: Medina del Campo, Arévalo, Villalpando, etc. where the situation is different. Cars contribute undoubtedly, the deterioration of the pavement, built with boulders, and also the soiling. Cars that make a Plaza Mayor and the typical and characteristic of Castilian-Leonese people do not have much life, and is one of the important places and rendezvous at the passing of the days for residents of the city. La Plaza Mayor de Benavente will become more attractive to neighbors and strangers if you put interest in it, ensuring that the construction or repairs to buildings in it respect not only the height but also the type of material employee and even the color of it, whether to maintain or repair the columns or pillars of the arcades, and if the time came that, with the greatest possible agreement, solving the problem of parking, and was free of cars to move and walk freely and enjoy the public places of entertainment that is or are installed in the future. Because, moreover, to be in it the municipal building, they have many people come to see the mayor or council, to the tourist office or the OMIC, and other services therein provided. The photographs shown are intended to see different times and situations of the square over the years. Citizens, neighbors or strangers, may show their pleasure or displeasure at such contemplation, but they all serve to recoder distant past or not so remote, the that must always be respected and valued properly. In 2007, the Mutual Aid Society of San José Benavente celebrated the 125 anniversary of its founding. For this reason I published this report in the weekly La Voz de Benavente and Regions, which at that time was a weekly newspaper that was available to readers every Thursday of the year.
This year 2011, as we approach the feast of St. Joseph, I wanted to remember the celebration, by posting to this blog, to inform all who visit. ----------------------------------------------

------------------------------------- On March 19 (2007) the former Mutual Aid Society San Jose Cultural Association and now known under the new law and regulation of associations, held its annual festival. He did it in a special way this year to coincide with the 125th anniversary of its founding.
And in the year 1883 a group of 34 people Benavente agreed to form a society of this type with the main purpose of "met each other in times of illness and death."
Such companies and guilds, so called, existed in many towns and cities from the sixteenth century. And the sick, dead, prisoners, poor and needy in general, were the protagonists, for receiving material aid and spiritual. In fact all had a saint as patron and protector. Some of these saints were very popular and much loved and revered by the citizens, including San Anton, San Blas, St. Crispin, etc. San Jose also, as in the present case.
St. Joseph, husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus, although his cult was introduced into the West from the fifteenth century, it remains one of the best known and appreciated from that in 1870 Pope Pius XI named him patron of the universal church, setting his party on March 19. Moreover, in 1955, Pius XII instituted a second festival dedicated to him, St. Joseph the Worker on May 1, Labour Day. Hence
be considered standard, not just carpenters, because this was his trade, but also of craftsmen in general, and also industry.
No wonder, then, that some of the founders of this society, were carpenters and many of their partners they had the most diverse trades. And no wonder that, even today, are part of it, and have attended the various events, many of the carpenters, ironworkers, sheet metal workers, masons and industrial city. Everyone feels good under the protection of the saint. How they feel, of course, the sick, dying and dying. As rightly said Santa Teresa, a promoter of devotion: "I made by a lawyer and master of the glorious Saint Joseph and I prayed a lot to it ... To other saints the Lord gave grace to help a necessity, this glorious saint who aids I have experience in all ... ".
That was the belief and this has been transmitted through these societies, guilds, full of traditions. C.
Association San Jose now has wanted to celebrate so solemn anniversary with various events, some of which recalls old obligations like to remember and honor their dead "be accompanied to the final resting place for individuals of a society that can not be replaced by any other person ...", (Article 6, 5, the old regulation. For this reason, on Saturday 15 and with the assistance of managers and some members, there was a dirge in the municipal cemetery, offering and placing a wreath on the cross of central avenue of the cemetery. The same day the historian Fernando Manzano benaventano D. Ledesma held at the auditorium of the Casa de Cultura de La Commit a conference on " The Guilds and Companies Mutual Aid ", by showing, in a pleasant and simple, which meant the foundation and membership of some of these institutions.
Nor Missed visit the sick, visit conducted at 11 am on day 19. Was this the main aim of the former Mutual Aid societies, as indicated in several articles of that regulation, which is also reflected in the new statutes.
Its founders, in 1883, saw a need for this type society "where diseases come to impossible to man for his care and to provide the necessary support ..."
Regarding the benefits to be accorded to its members say, "Relief 3 pesetas a day to partner ill until his recovery or death." (Art. 6, 1 º) and that "Any member suffer a chronic disease was showered only three months a year since the doctor certifies that is in bad condition (Art. 6, 2 º)
And among the duties of members include the following: "To inform the President who are ill or give notice that others are for the purposes of this society. " (Art. 20, 7).
Managers Association want to continue to comply with the provisions of its new statutes, without forgetting the tradition as possible. At 12 hours
Board, partners and guests attended a Mass in the church of Santa Maria del Quicksilver. And, although it is held at the altar of St. Joseph, which would be a novelty act and would enhance the pleasure of many attendees, it was very close to the holy and always ready to meet the requests of all.
In his homily the priest D. Leovigildo, after greeting everyone present reminded that "all the saints are in relation to the history of salvation, but a special and primitive, the Virgin, San Jose and of course Christ / God ." And San Jose emphasizes his human virtues such as good man who was honest, fair, simple, hardworking, etc. And who loved God and neighbor fulfilling the mission entrusted to him.
Each has a mission in life to be met individually, or collectively, societies or groups involved in beneficial or charitable purposes, as was the Mutual Aid Society of San Jose.
After the Mass, all members (140 at present), plus guests were directed to a nearby restaurant to grab a snack and the day ended with another moment of conviviality. After a few words of company secretary D. Juarez Julian acknowledging the presence of all, we pay homage, and are given a gift as a memorial to Maximina Maniega Aguilar, the oldest member and Teodoro Barrero Seijas, who is now 92 years old and appears as number one in the relationship partners.
Then the President Alejandro Paramio also welcomed everyone and expressed his desire that the Company move forward and others can celebrate a new century.
Finally, the Mayor of Benavente, congratulated the Directive by the events organized to mark the 125 anniversary and encourages them to pursue their activities, helping to revive a past and a tradition full of memories.
Although today are more or less solved some problems with disease and health, there are other much needed in today's society, including the relationship and coexistence among citizens, which no doubt contributes to the diverse membership associations.

Acidosis Causes Vasoconstriction Or Dilation

more than 50,000 visits ... Varas or garrotes1

When in December 2007 I started this blog on People's Heritage, with all that content words have never thought that in three years and some months were more than 50,000, those who have entered it and I have visited.
And, from what I have seen, through the many emails received, have been people, not only of Benavente and the Valleys, and provinces of Zamora and León, which in principle is addressed, but also other parts of Spain and even more other countries. And is that the subject on which I write, and I deal largely heritage popular, folklore, customs and traditions of the past, enjoying each day more interest and acceptance, and is a great attraction for many.
It remains for me to show my appreciation to all those interested in these or other matters of traditional culture, topics that continue writing, as far as possible, as a hobby and personal satisfaction and, of course, thinking about it you do not please, serve and is useful for others. Thank you very much everybody. Emiliano Pérez Mencia
