In 2007, the Mutual Aid Society of San José Benavente celebrated the 125 anniversary of its founding. For this reason I published this report in the weekly La Voz de Benavente and Regions, which at that time was a weekly newspaper that was available to readers every Thursday of the year.
This year 2011, as we approach the feast of St. Joseph, I wanted to remember the celebration, by posting to this blog, to inform all who visit. ----------------------------------------------

------------------------------------- On March 19 (2007) the former Mutual Aid Society San Jose Cultural Association and now known under the new law and regulation of associations, held its annual festival. He did it in a special way this year to coincide with the 125th anniversary of its founding.
And in the year 1883 a group of 34 people Benavente agreed to form a society of this type with the main purpose of "met each other in times of illness and death."
Such companies and guilds, so called, existed in many towns and cities from the sixteenth century. And the sick, dead, prisoners, poor and needy in general, were the protagonists, for receiving material aid and spiritual. In fact all had a saint as patron and protector. Some of these saints were very popular and much loved and revered by the citizens, including San Anton, San Blas, St. Crispin, etc. San Jose also, as in the present case.
St. Joseph, husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus, although his cult was introduced into the West from the fifteenth century, it remains one of the best known and appreciated from that in 1870 Pope Pius XI named him patron of the universal church, setting his party on March 19. Moreover, in 1955, Pius XII instituted a second festival dedicated to him, St. Joseph the Worker on May 1, Labour Day. Hence
be considered standard, not just carpenters, because this was his trade, but also of craftsmen in general, and also industry.
No wonder, then, that some of the founders of this society, were carpenters and many of their partners they had the most diverse trades. And no wonder that, even today, are part of it, and have attended the various events, many of the carpenters, ironworkers, sheet metal workers, masons and industrial city. Everyone feels good under the protection of the saint. How they feel, of course, the sick, dying and dying. As rightly said Santa Teresa, a promoter of devotion: "I made by a lawyer and master of the glorious Saint Joseph and I prayed a lot to it ... To other saints the Lord gave grace to help a necessity, this glorious saint who aids I have experience in all ... ".
That was the belief and this has been transmitted through these societies, guilds, full of traditions. C.
Association San Jose now has wanted to celebrate so solemn anniversary with various events, some of which recalls old obligations like to remember and honor their dead "be accompanied to the final resting place for individuals of a society that can not be replaced by any other person ...", (Article 6, 5, the old regulation. For this reason, on Saturday 15 and with the assistance of managers and some members, there was a dirge in the municipal cemetery, offering and placing a wreath on the cross of central avenue of the cemetery. The same day the historian Fernando Manzano benaventano D. Ledesma held at the auditorium of the Casa de Cultura de La Commit a conference on " The Guilds and Companies Mutual Aid ", by showing, in a pleasant and simple, which meant the foundation and membership of some of these institutions.
Nor Missed visit the sick, visit conducted at 11 am on day 19. Was this the main aim of the former Mutual Aid societies, as indicated in several articles of that regulation, which is also reflected in the new statutes.
Its founders, in 1883, saw a need for this type society "where diseases come to impossible to man for his care and to provide the necessary support ..."
Regarding the benefits to be accorded to its members say, "Relief 3 pesetas a day to partner ill until his recovery or death." (Art. 6, 1 º) and that "Any member suffer a chronic disease was showered only three months a year since the doctor certifies that is in bad condition (Art. 6, 2 º)
And among the duties of members include the following: "To inform the President who are ill or give notice that others are for the purposes of this society. " (Art. 20, 7).
Managers Association want to continue to comply with the provisions of its new statutes, without forgetting the tradition as possible. At 12 hours
Board, partners and guests attended a Mass in the church of Santa Maria del Quicksilver. And, although it is held at the altar of St. Joseph, which would be a novelty act and would enhance the pleasure of many attendees, it was very close to the holy and always ready to meet the requests of all.
In his homily the priest D. Leovigildo, after greeting everyone present reminded that "all the saints are in relation to the history of salvation, but a special and primitive, the Virgin, San Jose and of course Christ / God ." And San Jose emphasizes his human virtues such as good man who was honest, fair, simple, hardworking, etc. And who loved God and neighbor fulfilling the mission entrusted to him.
Each has a mission in life to be met individually, or collectively, societies or groups involved in beneficial or charitable purposes, as was the Mutual Aid Society of San Jose.
After the Mass, all members (140 at present), plus guests were directed to a nearby restaurant to grab a snack and the day ended with another moment of conviviality. After a few words of company secretary D. Juarez Julian acknowledging the presence of all, we pay homage, and are given a gift as a memorial to Maximina Maniega Aguilar, the oldest member and Teodoro Barrero Seijas, who is now 92 years old and appears as number one in the relationship partners.
Then the President Alejandro Paramio also welcomed everyone and expressed his desire that the Company move forward and others can celebrate a new century.
Finally, the Mayor of Benavente, congratulated the Directive by the events organized to mark the 125 anniversary and encourages them to pursue their activities, helping to revive a past and a tradition full of memories.
Although today are more or less solved some problems with disease and health, there are other much needed in today's society, including the relationship and coexistence among citizens, which no doubt contributes to the diverse membership associations.
